The 2012 Australia Day Australian Honours in music and the arts

Australian Honours were awarded at the highest level to conductor Richard Bonynge, now AC. As you know, Bonynge was husband to Joan Sutherland. He is a world figure in opera and a distinguished ambassador for Australian arts.

Recipients for awards for contributions to music are small in number this Australia Day, excepting for the OAM award for activities at the community level. All the more value to be placed on our musical OAMs. Thank you for sustaining that crucial interest in music where every citizen can participate.

Our list this time shows awardees who are noted as having contributed more generally to culture or the arts. We show them as indented entries in this list. Our appreciation goes also to you.

Of course, we take this opportunity to note and appreciate the award of Australian of the Year to actor Geoffrey Rush. The award to this most extraordinary artist must have very, very wide support, including the Music Council’s.

We are sure that the absence of AO and AM awards to music is not the result of any prejudice in the Honours Secretariat but rather, a lack of nominees. Remember that any Australian can make a nomination of any other Australian. Just get in touch with the Governor-General’s office in Canberra.
