The Arts Minister, Simon Crean, delivered a funding boost of $4.6 million to the music industry, with artist development, stage craft and songwriting the main winners.

After The Melba Foundation failed to secure ongoing funds in Tuesday's budget, its CEO and founder Maria Vandamme has vowed to keep on supporting Australia's best classical musicians.

The announcement of drastic cuts to the ANU School of Music degree were followed last week by its head, Professor Adrian Walter taking an indefinite leave of absence from his job. Today it was announced that he has been appointed as Director of the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts and will take up the post in September.

President Barack Obama has honoured Burt Bacharach and Hal David as "two kings of songwriting", presenting them with America's most prestigious prize for popular music.

Guiyang Symphony Orchestra

Guiyang Symphony Orchestra is the professional orchestra founded by a sole private enterprise in the whole of mainland China.  The establishment of the orchestra gets support from both the Guiyang Culture Bureau and Guiyang Xingli Group, a large scale retail enterprise in Guizhou Province.

Guiyang Symphony Orchestra will be participating in many major performances. Guiyang Symphony Orchestra has organised and will organize many tours outside Guiyang.  It has been the "Cultural Representative" of Guiyang.  The Orchestra currently has several openings for various sections, and welcomes application from musicians around the world.

Terms and condition of employment

Salary (gross in Chinese currency CNY)
a. Regular musicians CNY4,000 per month (based on the professional performance ability) + commercial performance    allowance.
b. Section principals CNY10,000 per month + commercial performance allowance.
c. We provide a single apartment for all full time orchestra musicians
d. The Salary includes one-month paid vacation
e. The Orchestra will purchase labor insurance and health insurance for each musician.
f. At the commencement of the initial Contract, Party A will provide the travel expense of coming to Guiyand from the present inhabited area.

Eligibility

Guiyang Symphony Orchestra welcomes applications from experienced, professional musicians, aged between 18-45, who have received a complete musical training in an institution of international repute and able to participate in English-language rehearsals.

Application Guidelines and Procedure

The application process consists of three stages.

i. The application registration
Applications must be submitted by post and should enclose with following: CV, one copy of passport, diplomas, along with 3 copies of a recent photograph.  Applicants must also provide copy of an audition DVD (which should be UNEDITED, CONTINUOUS and hsould be of all the pieces and excerpts required for the audition). 
The video should include:
a. any one work of the applicant's choice, approximately fifteen to twenty minutes in length.  The piece should accurately reflect the applicant's highest level of playing ability.
b. two excerpts of a high technical level in differing styles are to be selected from the appointed pieces in Guiyang Symphony Orchestra repertoire list (can be requested by email or phone).

ii. The audition DVD will be screened and a list of candidates for live audition will be compiled. Guiyang Symphony Orchestra will select an sudition panel that will review all the DVD submitted and compile a list of candidate for live audition.
(Applicants should note that all videos and other application materials will not be returned).

iii. Time and spot for live audition will be confirmed accordingly. Details of the live audition will be taken in Guiyang or otherwise noticed.

VIOLIN
a.Own Choice:
1st movement of one of the Mozart concertos (including cadenza)
b. Orchestra excerpts (can be emailed on request)

VIOLA
a. Own Choise:
One movement of one of the unaccompanied suites by  JS Bach
b. Orchestra excerpts (can be emailed on request)
c. Sigh-reading (might be given at live audition)

CELLO
a. Own choise:
One movement of one of the unaccompanied suites by JS Bach
b. Orchestra excerpts (can be emailed on request)
c. Sigh-reading (might be given at live audition)

DOUBLE BASS
a. Own choice:
1st movement of a standard concerto or One movement of one of the unaccompanied suites by JS Bach.

FLUTE
a. Own choice:
1st movement of a Mozart concerto
